Jack I wouldn't call it an obsession. As I do a lot of printing and have been hanging same in galleries and selling prints, it's critical to me to have a color managed workflow. With calibration, I consistently get a print that is exactly what I'm seeing on the monitor, which is critical when you're making large prints and spending a lot of money on top-of-the-line paper and archival inks.

The idea is not to adjust the monitor to match the printed image. It's to see the image on your monitor as it will print and make adjustments accordingly. Also, monitors 'drift' over time and need to be periodically readjusted. Some, such as my 30' ACD, don't show a full Adobe RGB color space. You make a point about the reduced brightness making the monitor too dim for general use.
