Well, the next possibility I'd investigate is the actual version of Excel that created the file & whether it's fully updated. Some tweaks have been made to the OOXML formats & the MS products seem to be far more sensitive to the differences than 'compatible' software from other developers. Some forms of protection & other aspects of an excel workbook are not recognized by other other programs so those apps just ignore what they don't understand. Just had a situation where a user could open the file but couldn't resize the window, although they could resize if opened by Pages or LibreOffice.
