I enjoyed Battleforge for a while, but I think it's virtually or literally dead now. Likewise, Age of Empires Online is pretty much dead and/or shut down. If it's not already been shut down, it is being shut down soon End of Nations was shaping up to be a great game, but internal conflicts between the developer and publiser killed it off (or seem to have, I haven't heard anything about it in months) The free C&C game was likewise cancelled in its closed beta phase. I personally don't think that many people in the RTS community are looking for a good free to play title (accusations of 'pay to win' would abound in most cases, even if not merited).
I think I'm in the vast minority when i say I'd love to see an intelligently implemented Free to Play RTS game (or tactics game) and have hopes that someone will eventually make it work. Any time I see 'Free' attached to a game it says one of two things to me: 1) They intend to make money other ways, generally by implementing a microtransaction 'pay to win' system.
2) It's not a very high quality game. There are probably exceptions to the rule, but I haven't seen any.
I would rather pay my money and have a really good game than pay no money and suffer with a horrible game. Games that would work on OS X Mavericks? Stop limiting yourself. Get if you want to enjoy a wider range of games. OS X has a horrible selection.
The best are probably EUIV, wargame airland battle, and, uh, rome 2? Not really a lot of RTS lately. I would go for EU III to be honest, more depth in my opinion.
Not that many RTS on the scene lately since the whole world knows only one thing 'starcraft this, starcraft that' which makes it harder for devs to come up with games that do better. I blame esports. Gone are the days of long and interesting RTS battles with massive base building, ballistics physics and huge maps. Now it's all fast paced clickfests filled with esports lingo and trash talking.
